“You’ve found out something secret. You know that, don’t you?”
Joan has just seen something she shouldn’t have. Far from home, she hears screams in the night. She’s uncovered a terrible secret that will change the course of her life.
Confronting our deepest fears, Caryl Churchill’s extraordinary play depicts a chilling world where everyone is at war, and not even the birds in the trees or the river below can be trusted.

“cryptic, chilling, funny”
“Surprisingly few directors have the bottle to revive work by Britain’s greatest living dramatist – the surreal singularity of Churchill’s vision understandably scares the shit out of people – but young director Kate Hewitt is looking to make a mark after winning the prestigious JMK Award, and she acquits herself well with this production in the Young Vic’s studio space, financed by the prize money …. Hewitt and designer Georgia Lowe use their scant resources slyly – initially it looks like the only set is the makeshift-looking wooden traverse stage, but a series of well-hidden trapdoors and other devices unleash a small torrent of coups de théâtre – in particular the mass execution scene, disarmingly fully realised.”

“This is a showcase production for the winner of the prestigious JMK award for direction, and the director Kate Hewitt brings a clarity and a cracking narrative pace that demonstrate comprehensively that she’s a worthy winner of this accolade … In the mark of a great directorial talent, Hewitt will make even the doubters fall in love with Caryl Churchill all over again.”
