‘Bird’ was presented by Root Theatre and Ros Terry for Echo Presents
It’s 4 in the morning and Leah Bird is alone in a flat in Derby waiting for her boyfriend to call. Over the course of a single night she tells us what it’s like to be fourteen, fearless and full of love. But everything isn’t what it seems, and as the sun comes up, Leah begins to unpick the true nature of her relationship.

‘Bird’ tells a story of child sexual exploitation, which is receiving increasing media attention following high profile cases in Derby, Rochdale, Oxford and elsewhere in the UK. Laura writes about this subject unflinchingly, with compassion and humour. The play has been informed by research with charities across the UK such as Safe and Sound Derby, the National Working Group for Child Sexual Exploitation and Grooming, Engage Blackburn, Crop and Helen Brayley and Ella Cockbain from UCL.
Crucially, ‘Bird’ explores this issue from a teenage character’s perspective, giving voice to a young victim of abuse. Watch the ‘Bird’ trailer here: http://youtu.be/FgrdbG1LLhg
